Our core service area includes Caterham, Warlingham, Coulsdon, Purley, Kenley, Whyteleafe, Woldingham, Oxted, Limpsfield, Godstone, Bletchingley, Reigate, Redhill, Banstead, Chipstead, Westerham, Lingfield and East Grinstead.

For larger or more comprehensive projects, we are happy to consider work further afield.

The ground changes a great deal across that area. Caterham and Woldingham sit on the chalk of the North Downs, Oxted and Godstone on the greensand below it, and by the time you get down to Lingfield and East Grinstead you are into Wealden clay. The same driveway specification does not work on all three, which is why each town has a page of its own rather than one list of names.

The ground

Chalk, Greensand and Wealden Clay.

The North Downs run right through the middle of our area, and what is under your front garden changes completely depending on which side of them you are. Caterham, Woldingham, Chipstead and Banstead sit on chalk. Dig into it and you get a firm, free draining base, but it is soft when wet and it does not like being churned up by a tracked machine in February.

Drop south off the scarp and you are into the greensand around Oxted, Limpsfield, Godstone and Bletchingley. Further south again, around Lingfield, Felbridge and East Grinstead, it turns to Wealden clay, which holds water, moves with the seasons and wants a deeper dig and proper drainage under anything you lay on it.

The houses

Twenty Towns, and No Two the Same.

The housing is just as varied. Purley, Sanderstead and Coulsdon are largely interwar and post-war suburbs with narrow frontages and heavy on-street parking, so a drive there is usually about getting two cars off the road and turning them round. Woldingham, Limpsfield and Chipstead have much larger detached houses on big plots, where the job is more often a sweeping drive, retaining and a terrace to match.

Reigate, Redhill and East Grinstead have a mix of everything, from Victorian terraces with a front path and a low wall to new estates that need the whole garden doing from bare soil. Each town page below sets out what we usually find there and what it means for the work.
